First Annual National Black Women's Town Hall Meeting
On July 11, 2008, history was once again made
at the National Headquarters of the National Council of Negro
Women. Only one day removed from the 133rd anniversary
of the birth of its Founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, NCNW along
with XM Radio Talk Show Host, Blanche Williams held the First
Annual National Black Women’s Town Hall Meeting.
Led by Dr. Dorothy I. Height, the Town Hall provided a venue for Black women to identify those issues of critical concern during this historic presidential electoral season. The event, which was covered and re-broadcast by C-SPAN, touched on a wide range of issues including the economy, health care, education, poverty, negative images of Black women in the media and more.
The Town Hall featured a wide array of notable experts on various aspects of the Black woman’s experience. Included were:
- Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President, Bennett College
- Dr. Jane Smith, former NCNW President and CEO, and current Executive Director of the LEADS program at Spelman College
- Ms. Faye Wattleton, President of the Center for the Advancement of Women
- Eleanor Hinton-Hoyt, President of the Black Women’s Health Imperative
- Ms. Melanie Campbell, Executive Director of the Coalition on Black Civic Participation
- Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever of NCNW’s Research Public Policy and Information Center.
