FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, DC —The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) President and CEO Shavon Arline-Bradley released the following statement upon learning about the death of Texas Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee:
“NCNW is saddened by the loss of Democratic Chief Deputy Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX-18), who was a stalwart advocate for Black women and our rights.
A life member of NCNW, she was never silent in the face of injustice. That is why, without hesitation, NCNW was honored to stand with her in support of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act that she sponsored as a senior member of the House Committees on the Judiciary and Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. NCNW Pledges continued support of this bill.
Congresswoman Jackson-Lee’s legacy and zeal for civil rights will forever be enshrined in the halls of justice. On behalf of her NCNW Sisters and affiliate organization members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and The Links, Incorporated, we pray that God bless her family, friends, and constituents during this time of grief. Our Prayers are with you and for you.”
