NCNW Technology and Telecommunications Fellow
The National Council of Negro Women seek a Telecommunications Fellow. This is a one-year appointment that provides an opportunity to support civil rights work related to telecommunications/technology/media policy.
The National Council of Negro Women is an “organization of organizations” (comprised of 300 campus and community-based sections and 32 national women’s organizations) that enlightens, inspires and connects more than 2,000,000 women and men. Its mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities. The Fellow will support the organizations’ work on media, telecommunications, and technology public education and policy development, focusing on issues at the intersection of media/telecommunications/technology and civil rights issues, such as the opportunities and risks posed by the first “high-tech” census, the use of technology in policing, and the role that access to advanced communications services like broadband can play in providing educational and economic opportunity. The goal of this work is to expand the capacity of the civil and human rights community in the area of media/telecommunications/technology advocacy and education and to ensure that civil rights issues are front and center in the policy debates over how our nation considers advanced communications.
Responsibilities
The successful fellowship candidate will engage with a broad portfolio of media/telecommunications/technology policy advocacy activities including but not limited to:
- Generating research on key media, telecommunications, and technology policy issues;
- Tracking federal and state legislation and federal regulations that affect the civil rights community and providing senior staff with recommendations for action;
- Helping manage the organizations’ relationships with an active coalition of civil rights and progressive organizations;
- Researching and drafting testimony (both written and oral) enabling the organization to contribute to hearings and regulatory proceedings;
- Participating in a busy schedule of coalition meetings, roundtable discussions, and product and policy briefings.
Qualifications:
- At least two years of advocacy and/or research experience with demonstrated interest in fields of civil rights, telecommunications, and/or technology.
- Outstanding ability to write clearly and effectively for multiple audiences, including Congress, federal regulatory agencies, the media, and community leaders.
- Experience in public interest advocacy, a Congressional office, or regulatory agency is a significant plus.
- B.A. or B.S. required.
- Ideal candidates should have strong writing skills, an attention to detail, strong project management skills, a desire and ability to work with diverse groups of people, the ability to work collaboratively, the ability to multitask, and share our strong commitment to civil and human rights and social justice issues. An ability to maintain confidentiality is a must.
- Compensation: $65,000-$75,000/ year
